Biowest is registered by the French Ministry of Agriculture (regulation (EC) n° 1774 / 2002) under the agreement n° FR 49.231.01 for the production of animal sera and plasma.
According to the European Regulation EC n° 999/2001, female donor animals are tested for BSE before the corresponding fetal blood is allowed to be processed. EU is pioneer in BSE testing and individual identification of animals through ear tagging, which ensures the best possible traceability and the lowest BSE risk and makes the EU origin the first choice of researchers in Japan and other selective markets.

EDQM certified FBS

EDQM certified FBS is your guarantee that the origin and the manufacturing process of the product have been certified by the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & HealthCare. The EDQM protects and promotes public and animal health in Europe. Its mission is to contribute to the basic human right of access to good quality medicines and healthcare, and to promote and protect human and animal health by establishing and providing official standards for the manufacture and quality control of medicines applicable in all the signatory states of the Convention for the elaboration of a European Pharmacopoeia.

Biowest can provide Foetal Bovine serum sterile filtered and packed in his facility that meets the criteria described in the current version of the monograph products with risk of transmitting agents of animal spongiform encephalopathies no.1483 of the European Pharmacopoeia. This is certified by the EDQM.

Animal Welfare, Ethical Production & Traceability

Biowest only works with foetal bovine blood which is collected as a by product from cows slaughtered for reasons unrelated to the animal’s condition of pregnancy. To ensure the ethical production of Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) Biowest has implemented procedures in the bleeding process that eliminate the risk of the foetus feeling any pain from the incision. Blood from unborn calves is collected only after these are registered to be dead, verified by operators through pertinent test measures for vital signs and (for selected origins)certified by the veterinarians in charge of the abattoirs. If any foetus should show any vital signs it is not bled until these have ceased.

The welfare of all animals involved in the process is another important issue. The production process of FBS is framed within the principles for animal welfare established by OIE (Terrestrial Animal Health Code 2007, part 3, section 3.7, chapter 3.7.1), which consider the following aspects:

That the use of animals carries with it an ethical responsibility to ensure the welfare of such animals to the greatest extent practicable
That the internationally recognized “five freedoms” (hunger, thirst and malnutrition; fear and distress; physical and thermal discomfort; pain, injury and disease; and freedom to express normal patterns of behaviour) provide valuable guidance in animal welfare.
That the internationally recognized “three Rs” (reduction in numbers of animals; refinement of experimental methods and replacement of animals with non-animal techniques) provide valuable guidance for the use of animals in science.
By making it possible to replace experiments on live animals with in-vitro cell culture, the use of FBS enhances the implementation of the three Rs: Reduction, refinement and replacement.

EU origin FBS benefits from EU guaranteed for adequate animal welfare guidelines to be observed throughout all aspects of production as covered by EU regulations, with detailed guidelines for the treatment on farms of animals, during transportation, and in abattoirs.

Identification of serum back to the individual animals and farms (through ear tagging) guarantees perfect traceability, and makes possible production of serum provided with “ID” or “Passport”.
